Foster Care

Some kids in the US are not living with their own families for one reason or another. They are being cared for by other families, called foster families. We asked our school social worker a little about foster care.

1. Do all children in foster homes come from families in trouble?

No-sometimes their parents die or their parents realize they cannot take care of them so they place them in foster care for awhile until they can. On other occasions, children are placed in a foster home due to abuse.

2. Do children in foster care feel a regular part of the family?

Sometimes they do. There are really good foster parents who love and take care of the children and there are some bad ones as well.

3. Are they switched to a lot of different homes?

Not all the time. Some children remain in their homes for years and even get adopted. Sometimes they do need to switch because the family can no longer care for the children or the children move to a group home.

4. Can foster children get adopted?

Yes.

5. What are the hardest things; and the best things about being in foster care?

I haven’t been in foster care but I guess the hardest thing would be the fact that you are away from your own family. That can be really hard on children. Probably the best thing is if the children are placed with a family that really loves and cares for them, it can be a wonderful experience.
