In my childhood my mum often read fairy tales to me. My favourite fairy tale was Dead Tsarevna and Seven Bogatyrs.

book coverOne tsar had a kind and beautiful daughter. But her stepmother was very angry and malicious. Every day she asked her mirror if she was the most beautiful woman. Mirror always told her yes. But one day the mirror told that her stepdaughter was the most beautiful. Stepmother was very angry and told her maid to take tsarevna to the forest and tie her to the tree there to die.

The maid was very sorry; she took tsarevna to the forest but did not tie her to the tree. Tsar was very unhappy about disappearance of his daughter and commanded to search for her, but nobody could find her.

Tsarevna went and went deeper in the forest and found a house. Nobody was there and she entered it. But at dinner time seven brothers bogatyrs (very strong men) came. They offered her to stay with them. So, Tsarevna stayed with them and did the house work and cooking.

Many days passed. And one day stepmother decided to talk to her mirror again. Mirror told her that Tsarevna was the most beautiful, so she knew that Tsarevna did not die.

Stepmother took poisoned apple, disguised herself into old woman and went to the house where Tsarevna lived. She gave her the apple to eat and Tsarevna died. When bogatyrs returned home they saw the dead Tsarevna. They were very unhappy and put her in crystal coffin.

That time Tsarevich Elysey who was searching for Tsarevna in the forest, came to the house, saw the coffin and broke it. Tsarevna became alive.

When they returned home, stepmother died from malice.

If you love Disney films you'll recognize this story as his very first animated full length movie: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. When it was made animators hand drew the actions on film!)
